1960 MOTOM 48 Moped (D280)

We discovered this sensational rare find in a private museum condition near Milan. Overall outstanding condition, very original and complete, this beautiful 1960 MOTOM 48 is a unique and special moto. Motom was a premium marque noted for iconic and progressive design and advanced engineering. Recent partial restoration cosmetically and mechanically, retaining a modicum of patina. This classic MOTOM 48 is ready for your weekend adventures or a prestige placement in your collection. A true example of Italian industrial art.

The Motom 48 offers many distinctive design details and bespoke engineering. The company was known for featuring 4-stroke engines of its own design, which were noted as reliable and dependable, and much less fussy and messy than the typical 2-stroke moped motor. The X-frame chassis is an artful combination of pressed steel components designed by Pinifarina. A smooth ride is offered by a girder style front suspension and a plunger rear. The fuel tank is integrated into the main frame spars in an artful fashion and there is a convenient storage compartment under the solo saddle. A useful package rack sits above the rear fender. Head and tail lights and front and rear brakes are fitted.

The Motom motor is a fascinating design that is suspended from the main frame and integrated into the pedal drive. Featuring a 4-stroke configuration, 48cc of displacement, 2.2 HP and a 3-speed manual gearbox, it makes the Motom a very capable moped.

Motom Italiana was founded by Battista Falchetto of Lancia and businessman Frua Ernesto De Angelis. Many of the engineers were also from Lancia. The company manufactured motorcycles and mopeds in Milano from 1945 to 1971. In the mid 50's Motom was the third largest motorcycle manufacturer in Italy. Today well preserved examples are exceptionally rare.
