The SS 180 is a rare and very special model, one of the most collectible Vespas. This particular scooter has been restored and well cared for and is in superb shape overall and shows and rides as new. In the mid-60’s, the Super Sport was the top of the line Vespa. Sleek and sporty, the Super Sport certainly has presence. It is a scooter that really straddles the transition of the Vespas from the old style to the new. It has the more angular body work of the later scooters, but was the last to retain the piston-ported style motor used by Piaggio from the very first Vespas. The Super Sports were only made for a few years and are not common today. These scooters have a real presence, and are certainly physically larger, and more powerful than their contemporary Vespa 150’s.
The design of the SS was much more angular than the rounded GS's with squared off edges and a trapezoidal shaped headlight that gave this scooter a thoroughly 60's appearance. Paint finish is exceptional with a rich Italian racing red shade, smooth and lustrous overall. Distinctive touches include massive cowls with alloy trim, large glovebox behind the legshield and a spare tire under the left hand cowl. A distinctive Vespa S.S. badge adorns the front of the legshield which also displays a Vespa Club D’Italia decal. The fear fender is accented with an alloy Super Sport badge and the attractive Siem taillight found on European market bikes. A comfortable Aquila Continentale dual saddle is fitted for sporty comfort.
This SS180 has been restored by a Vespa specialist in northern Italy and looks and runs great. All systems are in order and ready for show or go duty. Odometer shows only 2,023 mikes (3,256 km) TMU and the engine runs strong and revs freely. Shift action is crisp and sure. The SS 180 is a fast classic that offers enough power to deal with modern traffic and steady handling that provides a confident ride.
