1976 VESPA RALLY 200 (BM406)

The Vespa Rally replaced the Super Sport as the top of the line model in the late 1960’s and is regarded as one of the best ever Vespa models offering classic style and modern performance.
The Rally was updated in 1972 to 200cc and fitted with electronic ignition. On offer is a 1976 European market model and features the larger headlight and various details unique to that edition. This one is a very clean example that we sold originally to Bay area enthusiast several years ago and recently reacquired.
It was mechanically refreshed prior to the original sale and ridden only occasionally since. Very clean and original condition showing some minor scuffs, scratches and patina, but overall very decent. Odometer shows only 3,742 mikes, believed accurate. Mechanically excellent, starts, runs and rides well, showing a good turn of speed, strong brakes and agile handling. We have gone thru the scoot, addressed all issues noted and it is ready to enjoy to the fullest.
An attractive Rally 200 that shows very well, in sound mechanical condition, complete and unmolested. Neat features include an onboard spare tire, electronic ignition for reliable starts and a useful glovebox mounted to the legshield. All trim, switches, badges, lights and details correct and in fine shape. Perfect for the daily driver and the vintage Vespa enthusiast. Comes with California title and registration.
With the Rally, the Vespa reached an excellent balance of classic style with modern performance. Though the styling on the Rally was very similar to the Super Sport, the cowls and mudguard on the Rally were not nearly as wide as those found on the SS. Additionally, the aluminum strips that had adorned the cowls and mudguard on the SS, were deleted from the Rally. The glovebox on the Rally was also slightly smaller than that of the SS. The narrower, unadorned look of the Rally gave it a more sporting and less luxurious look.
With the Rally, the top of the line Vespa finally got a rotary valve powered motor. Versions of this motor had been used on the lower sized motors of the Vespa line since 1959, and had proven themselves robust and very reliable. The rotary valve induction allowed the oil mixture to be lowered from 5% on the SS, to 2% on the Rally a significant improvement. There were numerous internal motor changes to accommodate the new design.
On the road, the Rally is a joy to drive. It has a smooth and powerful motor. That, coupled with the large and comfortable dual seat, make this scooter that anyone would be proud to own and drive. If you only have one classic scooter, the Rally would be at the top of any list.
