1978 Harley-Davidson MX250 (D270)

A very unique and collectable example of the rare and special Harley-Davidson MX250. Produced in a limited run of approximately 900 units for the 1978 model year, most of these were shipped to the US to be offered for sale at Harley dealerships and raced in MX events. This example was originally purchased in Italy along with a twin by an Italian enthusiast who planned to race. The twin went to the track, but this bike was never raced. It remained in the collection and was ridden for fun on an occasional basis, before going into storage. It was recently given a minor restoration as needed to return it to very original condition. We located this pristine example in Italy and acquired the bike from a collector who was downsizing his stable. Correct in all details, professionally restored with little use or wear for its entire lifetime. A great find in spectacular condition with a fascinating history that provides an exciting vintage MX riding experience.

MODEL HISTORY : 1978 Harley-Davidson MX250

Harley-Davidson having purchased Aermacchi, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer, and noting the popularity of International motocross racing, decided to field a major effort riding on a contemporary 250 motocross racer - the Harley-Davidson MX250. A prototype run of 65 machines with a unique fork based rear suspension was built in 1975 at Harley’s Milwaukee racing department. The bikes were competitive enough to induce Harley to offer an improved version in 1978 with 900 machines built at the Aermacchi factory in Italy and shipped to the US to be offered for sale at Harley-Davidson dealers. Despite a large ad budget, significant marketing effort and a factory team with popular MX stars Marty Tripes, Rex Staten, and Rich Eierstedt, the effort yielded few positive results and even fewer sales. With engineering that was a bit behind the times, a hefty chassis and a powerful but very peaky motor the MX250 was a blast to ride but not a winning racer. The orange bullets were phased out of production after a single year. The rarity and unique, classic MX design has created a dedicated following of H-D MX 250 enthusiasts for these very cool collectables.
