1995 Bajaj Cheetak (BM281)

The vintage Vespa was popular world-wide.  In the very early days, all Vespas were made in the Pontedera factory in Italy.  However, it was not long before Piaggio licensed other companies to produce Vespas in other countries.  Some of the early licensees were in other European countries such as France, Germany, England, and Spain.   By the 60’s India had also become a very important market for Piaggio.  Yet, India had very restrictive regulations for importation of vehicles.  So Piaggio partnered with a local company to build scooters.  Bajaj was that company.  They first made a version of the VBB, but later made a version of the Sprint.  They made many many millions of these scooters with few substantial changes over the decades.

This particular scooter is one of those Bajaj Sprint derivatives, the Bajaj Chetak. The Chetak was the vehicle that allowed India to have personal transportation for that vast nation. They were built to be rugged and tough. While the Chetak was primarily sold in India, they were also exported to many countries as well – ironically including Italy. This is one of the Italian-export versions. For people wanting a brand new vintage scooter in the 90’s, with all of the vintage looks of a classic Vespa, the Chetak was the only game in town. This is a 90’s Chetak that is in excellent original condition. It is all original. Of course, it has some improvements on the 1960’s Sprint that it derived from. Most notably, it has a 12 volt electrical system, and functioning turn signals. It also has the hallmark of the Chetak, which is the massive legshield glovebox. These are so practical, one wonders why Piaggio did not offer them on the original Vespa. For anyone looking for a classic Vespa look, with some nice upgrades - or even one of them many fans of the Chetak – this is a superb example.
