ABOUT THIS MODEL:
The fourth generation SL model, R129 SL was first revealed as the V8 powered SL500 at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989 and response from the public and press was overwhelmingly positive, leading to years of success on showroom floors. The 600 SL V12 powered version was introduced in 1993. The 600 SL was intended as a technical tour de force and a true flagship model. Commanding a significant premium over the V8 500 SL model, the 600 SL was a statement car and a status symbol in the truest sense. From 1993-2002, there were 11,086 600 SLs built with the alloy, DOHC, 48-valve V-12. Making 389 hp and 420-lb.ft. of torque the 600 SL was a very impressive motorcar. The 0-to-60 MPH sprint took 5.8 seconds, and the top speed was 155 MPH. The R129 SL was the perfect platform for the awesome 5.9-liter 12-cylinder. While appearing identical to the 500 SL model, the front compartment was actually stretched 2” to allow room for the long V12 engine to be fitted. Clean, classic, contemporary styling, outstanding build quality, sporty road holding and numerous built-in safety features. Styled by legendary Mercedes-Benz design chief Bruno Sacco, he counted the R129 among his team's best work. Unique features included a number of safety advancements such as an automatic roll bar that automatically deployed in the event of a rollover. The roll bar can also be raised and lowered by the driver via a switch on the center console. The power folding soft top could be opened or closed in 30 seconds. The accessory hardtop is made of aluminum, and weighs only 75 pounds. The car is also equipped with a self-leveling suspension, traction control, and four- wheel disc brakes with ABS. Additional features include automatic climate control, power-adjustable and heated seats with driver position memory, dual airbags, a premium Mercedes AM/FM stereo, and walnut trim accents on the door panels, instrument cluster, and center console. The SL's seats were designed with advanced safety in mind with frames die-cast of a special magnesium alloy offering exceptional protection in the event of a side- impact accident. The seatbelts and the buckle latch were incorporated into this rugged seat frame, and the height of the belt was power adjustable with the headrest. Overall a true statement motorcar that defined luxury and set performance benchmarks for the period.
