1950 Bianchi Bicycle Mini Moto Motorized (D281)
Post war Europe and particularly Italy had a pressing need for inexpensive personal transportation. One of the more innovative solutions was offered by the Mini Motor company of Milan … a bolt on kit motor which could be fitted directly to a conventional bicycle. The kits consisted of a 38 or 48 cc 2-stroke engine fitted into a cast aluminum frame that was attached above the rear wheel. A ridged output gear was pressed against the rear tire thru a fender cutout and that drove the rear wheel of the bicycle. A spring loaded mechanism allows the drive cog to be released from contact with the tire. The motor unit was completely independent of the pedal drive, so the rider has the option of pedal or motor power. The Mini Motor kits were very popular in Italy and exported and licensed to both Britain and France.
On offer here is a Bianchi Gent’s bicycle from 1950 fitted with the Mini Motor Milan 38cc engine. This classic machine offers the balanced and elegant design that is characteristic of Bianchis, regarded as as excellent bicycles, advanced for the period. This Bianchi is complete and fully functional. The bicycle and motor display ample patina and very original, unrestored condition. The bike is fitted with a Europa sprung saddle, a chromed handlebar mounted bell and unique rod-actuated brakes. A clever generator driven off the front wheel provides power for the headlamp. The pedal drive system is fully enclosed. Overall condition is quite good for a 70 year old artifact. In all likelihood the motor might be persuaded to run with some attention, but the period correct Michelin tires are very aged, and the Bianchi is best suited to display only duties.
